Derek is a Chartered Civil Engineer with a First Class Degree
in Civil Engineering, and has been Chartered since 1970. Derek
has over forty years' experience in client, contracting, Local
Authority and consultancy organisations and founded his own
practice, JSM Designs Limited, in 1978 which covered the whole
range of Civil and Structural Engineering. He retired from the
practice in late 2005, but has been retained as a consultant
and is still actively involved. A specialist in Highway and
Drainage design, Hydrology and Flooding, Contract Documentation
Formation advice and claims management for small and large projects
on behalf of Developers and Civil Engineering Contracts within
the UK. He has practical experience in design and construction,
and working with other professionals in preparing long term
strategies in relation to major developments.
He has acted on behalf of Local Authorities in relation to planning
issues and has many years experience acting as an Expert Witness.
Derek administered construction contracts on behalf of clients
and consequently has had experience of dealing with the resolution
of contractual disputes. Over the last two years he has attended
the M.Sc. course in Construction Law and Arbitration at Leeds
Metropolitan University and won the Blake Newport prize for
the Law of Arbitration examination.
